Every child who has ever explored a West Coast shore relishes the discovery of a sea star, with its bumpy skin, jumble of arms and striking colours. But the once common treasure of the tidal pool is at risk of being eradicated along the Pacific coastline from a deadly combination of disease and warming oceans caused by climate change, said biologist Alyssa Gehman.

Since the darkness of sea star wasting disease fell upon the Pacific coast of North America in 2013, scientists have been working overtime to shed light on the consequences to the area's complex marine ecosystem. At least 20 species of sea stars from Mexico to Alaska were affected by the disease, but the sunflower star, an aggressive predator with 24 arms, was hit the hardest.

Endolithic parasites are troubling California mussels, which live in rocky intertidal areas from Mexico to Alaska. But as new research shows, they might also be helping them. Endoliths are a range of microscopic organisms that live in shells, coral, or even rock. Some of these organisms complicate the lives of bivalves by dissolving the bicarbonate in their shells.
